I agree with some of the points made by Geoffrey Watts concerning the cost of eating at Brighton and Hove Albion’s American Express Community Stadium on match days (Letters, September 4).
On the other hand, I have been lucky enough to be a member of the 1901 Club in the east stand since the stadium opened and find any concerns I had are quickly and efficiently dealt with.
I too think the cost of dining is quite high: £59 plus VAT per head without drinks is too much and far more than last season. This does, however, include a three-course meal before the game, a half-time and full-time light snack and a table allocated for you. If you want to add drinks, the cost moves up to £79 plus VAT. Perhaps for some supporters this is an acceptable cost.
It was possible to buy a meal of chips, salted beef, a baguette and salad for £12. My wife and I found it delicious and a few other people were buying this. It might be a bit more than you would pay in a pub but there is the cheaper option of buying a pie over the bar.
The bar now sells the proper three measures of wine and it’s possible to pre-order half-time drinks to save queuing. I also use my e-card which gives me a discount and saves time. I do feel the management listens and that improvements are happening.
I too received a reply from the Albion’s Paul Barber when I emailed him about his notes in a recent matchday programme. I don’t think many chief executives would even bother replying to one supporter. He gave a good explanation about the importance of raising money. Obviously, one way is through selling dining packages and meal options.
If I have to pay a bit extra to help get Brighton and Hove Albion into the Premiership, so be it.

Geoffrey Watts was spot-on with his letter. Paying £14 for a burger or £19 for a curry is not value for money.
I get a freshly made one in Covent Garden for £12.50, and it’s hot. Four fellow 1901 Club members complained their food was cold and were given a free round of drinks. But that’s not ideal when you’ve ordered hot food. Mr Barber implies that sales of food will take us to another level – would that be League One?

Albion fans will be eternally grateful to the few who led the thousands in the quest for our magnificent new stadium. But that doesn’t mean we have to put up and shut up.
I, like other fans, endured the hardship of Withdean and was fortunate enough from time to time to try its modest hospitality area. I dispute Mr Barber’s figure of £58 for food when often a basic roast or curry would cost about £20. I realise the Amex is quite different and that there is a premium to pay.
In our first season at the Amex, I had a 1901 membership. The staff were superb – they just didn’t have the tools to do the job. The food on the concourses was more plentiful, which in itself was bizarre. I decided to leave the 1901 Club last season for a seat in the east stand upper and its concourse eating.
We all know the food offer last season was so poor that we ditched the caterer to bring in a new fast food firm. Now at the start of season three at the Amex, there have been some problems with food service starting within an hour of kick-off and food running out just afterwards – so much for arriving early and staying behind.
At many inferior stadiums the food is better and quicker – why? Why also, when costs are so important, don’t we employ a catering manager and do all of this in-house, keeping profit in-house? If that’s not realistic, use a chain such as McDonald’s – at least they know the meaning of fast food.
Get it right and quickly, Mr Barber, or you will find more customers choosing to eat and drink elsewhere. I should know – I’m in the hospitality business myself.
