I feel compelled to respond to the letter entitled “Run of the Mill” from Councillor Ken Norman (The Argus, September 2).
Either Coun Norman has forgotten something or he is seeking to claim the credit for Brighton and Hove City Council officers’ work.
At the time these measures were implemented, I was the city’s road safety manager and there is nothing wrong with my memory or that of those in my team who worked on the Mill Road solutions.
While I accept he did actively lobby officers to improve road safety in Mill Road, Brighton, it was in fact officers from the Road Safety Team who suggested the “successful” hatching solution, not Coun Norman, after consultation with the police. What Coun Norman was proposing was not viable and potentially less safe.
The “petty bureaucracy” he refers to is presumably the need for the council to adhere to national guidelines on the setting of speed limits and other design constraints in order to protect it from potential liability and to ensure police support for any measures implemented.
They, after all, have responsibility for enforcement. I don’t expect councillors to understand the principles of liability or enforcement, so give credit to the professionals.
