The proposal to extend the 20mph speed limit throughout Brighton and Hove is, in my opinion, flawed on two counts.

Firstly it is flawed practically because there is no way it can be properly monitored on every road and street involved and it is unrealistic to think that when a road is wide, straight and clear drivers will abandon common sense and trundle along at this reduced speed.

Secondly, it is flawed psychologically; drivers who already ignore speed limits drive without due care and attention and are likely responsible for most road accidents. If they can’t keep to 30mph, they most certainly won’t do so at 20mph.

Of course, there are areas where this lower speed should operate: busy shopping areas (although these are usually self-regulating owing to the number of buses and general traffic), around schools (but only during school hours) and narrow, residential streets.

One further comment: I’ve noticed that within the present 20mph zones most drivers use their own judgement and drive at speeds appropriate to each situation, as per the driving test.
