Caroline Lucas is easily one of the most impressive and effective MPs in Parliament today. Brighton is fortunate to have her.

Her principled opposition to the “bedroom tax” and fracking is well known but particularly impressive at this time is her opposition to any military attack on Syria (The Argus, August 29), an act which the Russians, Chinese and Iranians have warned could easily lead to a global war.

After the lies we were told about Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction and the destruction of countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Yugoslavia, can anyone take seriously what is being said about Asaad?

These countries have been destroyed for the benefit of US, British and French companies who have emasculated their health, education and social security services, plundering their natural resources, particularly oil but also cobalt, cadmium, uranium and natural gas.

Further, these wars have been part of the “Great Game” as it was called in the 19th century – to encircle Russia, Britain and France being joined in this endeavour in the 21st century by the US. The latter country, of course, used chemical weapons in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos in the 1970s as well as nuclear weapons against Japan in 1945.

No country has the right to attack another country unless it itself is the object of a direct and immediate threat, and unless such action is explicitly sanctioned by the United Nations Security Council.
