Not content with having destroyed the character of Hove’s once beautiful Drive as a result of the installation of cycle lanes and the imposition of a 20mph speed limit, it seems Brighton and Hove City Council is now turning its attention towards Shirley Drive.
A recent questionnaire sent to those in the Hove Park area asked for views on the extension of the existing 20mph limit upwards from Old Shoreham Road. I have yet to meet anyone in favour of this proposal, which is totally inappropriate and would be another waste of time and taxpayer’s money.
With regard to Shirley Drive, however, it seems the council would not just stop there as reference was made to attempted enforcement by introducing speed humps and other measures, whatever they might be.
The council appears to be completely ignoring the guidelines set out recently by Eric Pickles, the communities and local government secretary, who specifically called on local authorities to ban speed humps altogether.
His department is about to issue new planning guidelines to force councils to become more car-friendly. I hope our council will take heed.
Mr P Gordon, Bishops Road, Hove
