As a regular reader of The Argus, I would like to comment on some recent issues.

I was born in Brighton and lived there until 15 years ago. It used to be a great place but now is too crowded. It does not cater for ordinary people.

When we were young, there was much to do. We had an ice rink – if not for skating, you could spectate for a few pence. There was also the News Theatre in North Street, where cartoons were shown.

We joined the Air Training Corps, Sea Cadets or the Women’s Junior Air Corps, which were fun and kept us off the streets. Is the Brighton Boys’ Club still in existence?

We all had bikes and were off at weekends to Barcombe Mills or the Dyke. The Hippodrome had a variety of shows on offer.

Do we really need a viewing tower? After all, once one has been on it you won’t want to keep repeating the experience. It’s the same as the Sea Life Centre, the Brighton Wheel or the Royal Pavilion.

Where is our seaside show, covered market, coach park, indoor amusement park or ice rink, all of which would generate money?

There aren’t many toilets and high parking costs. And yes, Katy Rice (The Argus, August 26) is right in stating that service in shops and cafes is poor.

Weston-Super-Mare and Hastings both had their piers rebuilt while Eastbourne and Worthing can boast great shows.

And who wants to go shopping while on holiday?

I think Brighton should look more at family-orientated entertainment, not only for tourists but for everyone.
