I read Cara Courage’s letter in The Argus of August 28 about cycle-friendly Brighton and Hove.
I would like to raise an important point which perhaps does not occur to many cyclists.
Wheelchair users, such as myself, need a vehicle’s passenger door to be wide open to be transferred to the wheelchair.
This is not possible when a bicycle blocks the way when left secured to a disabled parking bay signpost.
Many a time, in Brighton, I’ve seen disabled parking bays obstructed by bicycles.
There can even be more than one bike to a post.
As a result, unfortunately, a bicycle can render disabled parking spaces next to useless for some disabled people.
It is also very frustrating to return to your car and find, because of a bike which has appeared, one cannot access the car to get in.
Maybe local councils could consider bringing in a bylaw and/or signage saying “No cycles” where there are disabled parking bays with posts, or consider something else more appropriate to prevent this unfortunate situation from occurring.
