The recent passing of Tony Millard will evoke many memories for sports fans across Sussex (The Argus, August 26).
Mine come from my experience of being involved in the Sussex cricket league for the past three seasons.
On the occasions when Tony Millard umpired it was far from uneventful. If he felt a player was not behaving in the spirit of the game, he would not be afraid to express his opinion.
He held umpiring posts in the league up until five days before his passing.
I saw him at the County Ground organising two league cup finals.
He did polarise opinions and ruffle a few feathers in his time, but one cannot doubt his commitment to local cricket.
