A recent correspondent waxed lyrical over the plight of red telephone boxes (Letters, August 27).
They certainly are part of the urban landscape.
I remember in the 1970s “ladies of the night” using lads to put their cards with phone numbers up in these boxes.
A few minutes later, the more puritanical women would come along, take the cards and dump them in the rubbish bins.
Back would come the lads and stock the boxes up again – back came the women.
This would only happen twice. The last visitors would be the men looking for “French lessons” or a “Swedish massage”, and having to delve in the bins to find their services.
