* Get friendly with funghi...
The ancient woods of the Nymans estate reveal a wealth of riches in the autumn and at 11am and 2pm on October 19 to 25, visitors are invited to join a tour through the wildlife, funghi and colourful foliage of the season.
From 11am on September 27, the estate’s head gardener will give an insight into the gardening projects and practices that have made the gardens some of the finest in the country, as well as answering any questions fellow gardeners may have.
* Walk through history...
Grassy Roman roads, a 19th-century folly and a Second World War decoy airfield – a journey through the Slindon estate is a journey through the past.
Mixing downland and farmland, woodland and wildlife, a new self-led walk invites walkers to see the county from another angle. From the top of Nore Hill Folly, it’s possible to see the spire of Chichester Cathedral and as far as the Isle of Wight.
* Mess about on the river...
Lichen-covered Woolbeding Bridge is the start and end point for a two-mile self-guided walk following the route of the River Rother.
Travel the twists and turns until you get to Stedham Mill, once used for the production of blotting paper.
The path links to various other walks, and includes spectacular views of the South Downs.
*Discover Turner’s Sussex...
Petworth House and Park was a favourite subject for JMW Turner.
This walk reveals the views and secret spots that inspired many of his paintings, which can then be viewed afterwards in Petworth House.
The country house is also offering guided walks to see the estate’s herd of fallow deer, followed by a picnic in the parkland. (October 19 to 27 from 10.30am) *For all the family...
At Uppark, a special family trail takes kids and parents off the beaten track of the gardens and into the surrounding woods where a hideaway den has been installed for children to play in and develop themselves.
The woods will be filled with autumn colour from the beech, ash and hazel trees and there is wildlife and funghi to be spotted. At Halloween, younger children can take part in a spooky trail around the gardens while older children can try their hand in the tunnel.
