This is the air raid shelter – luxurious by Second World War standards – constructed for the girls of Roedean School in Brighton.
Standing on its own in downland, the huge school must have been a tempting target for German bombers and it was also not far from the gas works at Black Rock.
Soon all the girls were evacuated for their safety to the North of England and the school was taken over by the Royal Navy.
This picture comes from the extensive collection of Sussex historian David Rowland, who lives in Telscombe Cliffs and has written several books on the Second World War.
