A broker who abused police officers and told them he was a millionaire was unable to afford a court fine.

Commodities broker Benjamin Gross, 24, threw money at officers and called them “lower class” during a drunken night out in Brighton, a court heard.

But Gross, who lives with his parents on New Church Road, Hove, admitted he only earned £300 per week when he appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

The boastful broker was fined a total of £400 plus £85 court costs after pleading guilty to resisting arrest and failing to comply with police directions – but could not pay the money until his next pay-cheque.

Chairman of magistrates Andrew Hamilton said: “For someone in your position this is clearly not acceptable behaviour.”

The court heard Gross and his colleagues had been treated to lunch and drinks in London on August 8 after a successful month at the firm.

Later that evening Gross travelled to Brighton to meet with friends at Hotel du Vin.

After heading towards nightclubs on the Lower Esplanade, Brighton seafront, Gross came into contact with police officers.

The drunken 24-year-old told police officers he was a millionaire, called them lower class and threw notes of money at them.

He was issued with a Section 27 order and told to leave the area for eight hours on the grounds his presence would contribute to alcohol-related crime or disorder.

Gross then went into a nightclub and was spotted by the police officer who attempted to arrest him.

During police interview he admitted he was drunk but could not remember what he said.

James Warren, defending, said: “He has apologised for his behaviour. He was intoxicated and it is not usual for him to act like that. He was remorseful during his interview. He was offered a Section 27 notice but didn’t know where he was banned from going.”
