Police were called to a quiet street after reports a man was carrying a gun.
Officers swooped on Stirling Way, Horsham, at 11am today.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Police received a report that a man had been seen outside a house in Stirling Way, Horsham, holding what appeared to be a long-barrelled weapon of some kind.
"Officers contained the address and ensured that local people were safe.
"Shortly after 1pm armed officers entered the address and arrested a 34-year old local man on suspicion of firearms offences.
"A weapon which is believed to be an air rifle was seized.
"There are no reports at this time of firearms being discharged or of any injuries.
"Enquiries are at an early stage and no further information is available at present."
