Parking restrictions could be extended after complaints about commuters clogging up spaces.

A consultation into the proposed scheme to the north of Preston Park Station will be launched on Monday.

Residentswould have to pay £120 per year while business would pay £300 per year for a parking permit.

Affected households in Tivoli Road, Maldon Road and Tivoli Crescent North will be sent questionnaires by Brighton and Hove City Council.

Councillor Ian Davey, lead member for transport, said: “Many residents living to the north of Preston Park Station have made their wish for controlled parking in their area known to the council.

“We want to find the right balance for residents, businesses and visitors as well as to keep traffic moving safely. Residents parking schemes have worked well to ease parking pressures in other areas of the city and could be a viable option towards making significant improvements here too.”

The proposed scheme would operate 9am-8pm daily with bays for use by residents and their visitors, businesses and services.

Other issues such as double parking, parking on pavements and double yellow lines and improved access for emergency vehicles will also be addressed.

Michael Brophy, of Maldon Road, said: “I was against the scheme a few years ago but since then cars are being pushed up which has made it very difficult for us to park.”

Rebecca Habber, of Tivoli Crescent North, said: “We never get a space and people quite often park across the drive. I’d be prepared to pay if it sorted the problem.”

Coun Ken Norman (Con, Withdean) said: “It’s a bad move. I’m against the proposals. It will seriously affect residents by pushing vehicles into the next area,”

adding: “We should look at the whole city.”

An exhibition will be held at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Dyke Road, on Tuesday, September 17, 1-5pm and Wednesday, September 18, 4-8pm and at Hove Town Hall, ground floor foyer, 9am-5pm September 2 to October 11.
