Gay pride, planning and a campaign to pedestrianise a busy city street were the hot topics in yesterday's Meet The Argus.
Reporter Ben Leo set up camp in St Jame's Street, Kemptown, to speak with local residents and Argus readers about pressing issues and local concerns.
Mrs Gee, 98, from Eastern Road, said she was worried local residents were making significant changes to their listed houses without proper planning permission.
She said: “There have been a few properties around here where changes have taken place to the facades without permission from the council.
“These are listed buildings and require special consent. I don't think it's been given.”
Sheila Harris, from Kemptown, said she was upset at the “anti-social” side of the recent Gay Pride celebrations.
She said: “I live in St Jame's Street and when Pride was on, there was some distasteful behaviour going on down here that should never be allowed.
“I'm all for Pride and think it's great, but it needs to be kept to the park and not spill out onto the streets for after parties. Apart from the behaviour of some people, the streets were a mess.”
A St James Street resident was keen to suggest his road should become pedestrianised and car-free in search of a more “continental” vibe.
Paul Dunn, 47, said most local business owners would be in favour of the idea.
He said: “St Jame's Street is the hub of Kemptown and one of the busiest and best streets in the city.“I'd like to see a campaign started to make the area car and traffic free and have it totally pedestrianised with the aim of making it an even busier and better attraction.
“I can imagine the street brimming with residents and tourists if it were to happen. The business owners would probably all support the idea if it meant trade would go up.”When asked about the St Jame's Street bus routes, Mr Dunn said: “I don't think it will be that much of a problem. We have the seafront road for starters as another main artery into the area. I'd like to see some consideration given to the idea.”
The next Meet The Argus session will take place next Thursday (September 5) at Hollingbury Post Office, Hollingbury Place between 11 am and 1pm.
