Bus bosses are looking for a kind-hearted enthusiast to take care of its “Old Girl”.
For six decades, the Bristol K has ferried countless of people on their travels across the county.
But, shortly after celebrating her milestone birthday, Brighton and Hove Bus Company has launched an appeal to find the 60-year-old a new home.
In an effort to free up space in its depot, the firm wants an enthusiast to come forward and look after the 1953 vehicle.
However, part of the deal will require the new owner to lease the red and cream bus back to it for special occasions.
Writing in an internal newsletter, a spokesman for the firm said: “We love having her around but, with a need to maximise our space availability and ensure resources are focused on business needs, it has been getting tougher to keep her.
“Add to that her habit of failing MOTs and we can see that time for a new arrangement has come.
“We’re looking for a good home for the K, someone who will look after our old friend and also lend her back to us occasionally for special events.
“So interest is being invited to some to adopt ‘The Old Girl’ and take good care of her.
“Like any good family, we will ensure we keep our visiting rights.”
The Bristol K type was first introduced on UK roads in the late 1930s.
According to enthusiasts, it proved to be a true workhorse with some operating into the 1970s.
Brighton and Hove only has one Bristol K left and it is used sparingly for special themed days or events like weddings.
Andrew Boag, of consumer group Brighton Bus Watch, said: “I think it requires some attention.
They are not automatic like those used currently so there are not many people out there who can drive it.
“So it will probably be a bus enthusiast who comes forward to take it on.
“They’re not like classic cars; they do not really go up in value that much.”
