An MP is leading a campaign to oppose full military intervention in Syria.
As crisis in the Middle Eastern country deepens, MPs have been recalled to Parliament so they can debate the UK’s response to the issue.
Ahead of the vote, Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas said she had written to the Prime Minister asking him to publish the legal opinion he will have sought on military action.
The Green MP added she would be tabling her own resolution, setting out that the case for military action against Syria has not been established Speaking yesterday, Dr Lucas said: “It is vital that MPs’ deliberations are informed by all relevant information, and based on sound legal grounding.”
But Foreign Secretary William Hague said it was a “very different” situation to the build up to action in Iraq.
He said: “Our government is going about it in an entirely differentway with a national security council, with clear legal advice from the Attorney General, going to Parliament with the maximum information that we can provide.”
Arundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert said: “If we decide merely to be goodmen determined to do nothing, we should have stayed at home.”
Hove MP Mike Weatherley said: “It is not clear yet exactly what Parliament will be voting upon. What is certain is that our decision will have grave consequences, whichever way we proceed.”
