I write to alert readers of The Argus to the Love The Bus Pass campaign, which is supported by the National Pensioners’ Convention and pensioners’ groups from all parts of the country.

I am co-ordinating this national effort to get tens of thousands of signatures and deliver them, on buses, to Downing Street next year, before the next general election, by which time the fate of the bus pass as a benefit will be decided.

While all three major parties pledged before the 2010 general election to keep the pass during the lifetime of this Parliament, high-ranking coalition members soon started to say the pass was in need of “reform” (ie destruction, as in “reform” of the NHS).

Nick Clegg recently called to ban “millionaires” from having bus passes – how many of these have you seen on your local bus?

The talk now isn’t just about banning “millionaires”, which would save next to nothing, but of excluding those pensioners whose income is over the tax threshold – 5.6 million of us. Whatever your age, this is about you and yours – you’re next, or you have parents and grandparents who have passes.

Sign up to the Love The Bus Pass campaign and leave politicians in no doubt that they attack the England bus pass at their peril.
