I cycle around Brighton and Hove on a daily basis and, while I have seen such an improvement in provision for cyclists in recent years, there is still room for more.

Let’s have more bike racks, for starters, especially in the main shopping areas. And not just more parking but more intelligent planning of this, too.

So many of the racks on pavements, if set at a 45-degree angle, could accommodate more bikes in the same space.

Lampposts, pavement width permitting, could be fitted with a circle rack.

An art competition to design racks to replace the U-shaped ones we have at the moment would be a good idea – something better which can handle more bikes and is representative of the city in design terms.

I know a common complaint from drivers of cyclists (and yes, when I am behind the wheel of my car I have complained too) is cyclists jumping red lights.

A solution for this would be phased lights which allow cyclists to leave first and get ahead of the traffic they feel bearing down behind them.

I appreciate the introduction of contra-flow roads, bike lanes and cycle bays at junctions. These could be better policed or signposted – the contra lane at the bottom of Trafalgar Street in Brighton takes drivers by surprise while London Road is a well-known black spot for cars parking in cycle lanes.
