An animal shelter is warning of a “kitten crisis” with abandoned pets coming in faster than they can be re-homed.
The Blue Cross charity, which has a branch in Northiam, near Battle has seen a huge increase in kittens being dumped this summer.
The abandoned animals have been found in all sorts of places – including a train, golf course, car park and an old sofa.
The East Sussex branch is currently caring for eight kittens of which three – Ratchet (pictured), Widget and Sprocket – were born on site.
Maria Marmo, the centre manager, said: “Sadly, it’s all too common that we see cats given up or being abandoned, because they are pregnant and their owners can’t cope with the kittens.
“We really want to emphasise how important it is to get your pet neutered to help to prevent the birth of so many unwanted kittens every year.”
