Elderly residents claim groups of “screaming and shouting” youngsters are making their lives a misery – with some calling for them to be slapped with an Asbo.
Those living in Aldrington Place in Bellingham Crescent, Hove, complain they are kept awake by groups of 14 to 20-year-olds regularly gathering outside their building.
Despite complaints to the police and Brighton and Hove City Council, those in the sheltered housing block claim the authorities have done nothing in response to the disruption, which goes on until 2am in the morning.
Ian Wilson, 69, who lives in the flats, said: “It has got to the stage where something positive has to be done.
“There are a lot of parks and green spaces for them to play in yet they continue to gather in our road.”
Mr Wilson said the disruption includes screaming, shouting and abuse to those passing.
He added that footballs were kicked at the windows and doors of properties.
Mr Wilson said he had been out to speak to the group but he was told by police not to do it again.
Ward councillor Dawn Barnett asked the local authority to write to neighbouring streets to remind parents they are responsible for the behaviour of their children.
Coun Barnett said: “I don’t know where all these kids come from, I just want them to move on.
“An Asbo might work – I just want something to be done as this is completely unacceptable.”
'Trigger'
A council spokesman said: “We are committed to effectively tackling and resolving nuisance and antisocial behaviour throughout the city.”
He added the council was currently trialling a system known as “community trigger” for when an ongoing problem has not been addressed.
If it meets the criteria, the local authority pledges to agree “ appropriate actions” within five days.
Inspector Jason Hazzard, of Hove Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “I understand how frustrating this must be for the residents of Aldrington Place.
“My officers have attended when there have been complaints about groups of youths.
“They have spoken at length to the residents and given advice to the kids about their behaviour and the effect it is having on local residents.
“However, to date, officers have not witnessed any antisocial behaviour or been able to identify suspects causing antisocial behaviour but we will continue to liaise with the residents of Aldrington Place and attend when there are issues reported to us.”
