I write regarding the letter (The Argus, August 20) about the closure of the William IV gate to enter Brighton’s Royal Pavilion.

I asked one of the museum curators nearly two years ago why is it closed. He said to stop people bringing their cars into the Pavilion’s grounds.

I said that surely the authorities could put a notice somewhere saying “Official cars only.”

Before that time, as a Brightonian, I couldn’t remember these gates ever being closed. Perhaps the last time was when Prince Regent had a sentry on the gates?
