Following the consultation papers for 20mph limits in Patcham and Hollingbury dropping through my letter box, am I the only person who is beginning to think Brighton and Hove City Council’s attitude on this subject is bordering on the obsessional?
Astonishingly, they propose introducing this limit to every road within the ward, with the possible exception of Braybon Avenue and one part of Carden Avenue.
These are arterial routes through the area, as are Winfield Avenue, Vale Avenue and Carden Hill. In the questionnaire, it even asks if the A23 should be limited to 20mph – a ludicrous proposition!
More worrying is that the council is so deadly serious.
Exactly what world do our councillors live in? A car-free, bicycle-only one, I would suggest, with their inflated expense accounts enabling them to afford public transport.
It is totally preposterous to suggest everyone is going to drive in second or third gear and respect what is largely an unenforceable limit, particularly when many have difficulty keeping to the current 30mph limits.
I am no expert but what detrimental effects would this have on pollution and petrol consumption?
What accident statistics support these proposals? I can understand how this may work for the town centre and accept the need for more care on side roads, especially narrow ones with cars parked either side.
I witness vehicles driving in my street at 40mph or more every day and it is clearly dangerous. Yet, if the current limits are not enforced, what chance at half this speed?
It is also suggested there will be a need to install traffic-calming and (yet more) signs. Are there not more pressing issues to spend our taxes on?
In my opinion, the most dangerous road in Patcham is Mill Hill.
Many deaths have been caused there by speeding vehicles coming down the hill colliding with those coming in the opposite direction whose view is totally obscured.
If ever there were a need for a 20mph limit or traffic-calming, it is on the downward approach towards the tunnel. Is this to be included in the proposals? What do you think?
