Reading Andy Steer’s letter regarding Max Miller and his meanness (The Argus, August 20) prompted me to quote a small piece from a booklet my late mother wrote about her childhood.
She used to swim off the beach at Brighton and later became the county swimming champion.
I think this part would interest some people and maybe change their view of Max: “To get a few pence we went diving by the Palace Pier.
“People used to throw us down money from the pier and we would dive down and grab it before it touched the bottom.
“One day I [felt like] a millionaire. I dived and got half a crown. When I looked up it was Max Miller, the music hall comedian, who had made my day.”
So, you see, he wasn’t all bad with money.
