I recently received my consultation pack regarding the extension of the 20mph limit into Patcham and Hollingbury.
However, before I even opened it, I was left wondering just how much of a consultation this will actually be as the envelope proclaimed: “Brighton and Hove – a 20mph city.”
Inside the envelope, both the information leaflet and the questionnaire were similarly labelled.
Do my views matter? Is it all a foregone conclusion?
While the information leaflet assures me that “a clear majority of residents across the city have told us they are in favour of reducing speed limits for residential and local shopping areas” it would seem a clear majority of business-owners were against the proposals.
The 2012 consultation was mailed to 10,000 citywide addresses and got a 36.89% response rate, but we have no idea of how many of these people lived in the areas where the 20mph limit was subsequently introduced, which would have provided a truer reflection of the wishes of those affected.
I recommend all recipients of this latest “consultation” complete and return their questionnaire as this will at least ensure a majority verdict for 20mph is a true reflection of what people want rather than an ideology that our minority Green Council wants to impose.
