I try to be a good citizen. I try to recycle to save the planet. But Brighton and Hove City Council has been making it very difficult for me.
As a homeowner, I do try to keep my garden neat and tidy, which produces a certain amount of waste.
I asked the council recently why it does not collect garden waste. The answer is because apparently lots of people live in flats and don’t have gardens.
I believe we are missing a trick here. Other councils collect garden waste, food waste and general kitchen waste, which is then composted communally and sold on to cover the costs.
I don’t have a need for compost in the garden and neither do I have room for a compost bin.
I’ve not cut the front grass for months as I have no way of getting rid of the grass.
The suggestion from the council was that I take it to the tip in my car – emitting fumes into the atmosphere.
The council seems closed to the idea of collecting composting waste despite the fact other councils already do this.
We have a Green MP and Green representatives on the council – it doesn’t seem they have any regard for the environment at all and are too busy getting themselves in the press to get a bit of publicity.
Finally, through a Twitter argument, the council admitted that I could put a bin bag of garden waste in my wheelie bin. If only it had said that to start with...
