A national charity is working with a college to boost the skills of young people.
Up to 30 apprentices aged 16-19 at Northbrook College in Worthing will train for a Level 2 Diploma in workbased horticulture.
Environmental charity Groundwork says the scheme is an exciting opportunity for Sussex-based horticultural organisations to help their business as well as making a real difference to young unemployed people looking to make that first important step into work.
Jackie Martin, project officer, said: “Groundwork’s core focus is about changing places and changing lives.
“Groundwork has significant experience of delivering a range of training and employment programmes nationally.
“In Sussex, with these new horticultural apprenticeships, “Groundwork will be helping young people across this region reach their potential as well as supporting local employers to meet the skills gap in the current market.
“For participating employers there are no training costs and, uniquely with this course, the trainer comes to their work place offering increased productivity with significantly reduced costs. Participating employers may also be eligible for a £1,500 apprentice incentive grant.
“Apprenticeships are an excellent route for employers to up-skill their workforce, helping their business to grow whilst developing skilled employees trained to match their specific needs.
“Apprenticeships are boosting productivity by enabling businesses to grow their skills base. The average apprenticeship increases business productivity by £214 per week, with these gains including increased profits, lower prices and better products.”
