I am no great fan of the Olympics, though I do enjoy track athletics.
I have to acknowledge what I consider to be the greatest track performance I have seen in my 60 years by an English woman.
Just when I thought sport couldn’t have any effect on me, something happens to raise my already high blood pressure.
Last Monday, August 12, Christine Ohuruogu (pictured right), a modest but talented woman, got me leaping and shouting like a ten-year-old as she ran during the World Athletics Championships in Moscow.
“Go on girl,” I screamed at the TV. Somehow she hauled in the favourite and won – an unbelievable victory. Well done.

I wonder if many people, like me, when sitting down find their mind going back to many years ago.
Watching the athletics on TV recently cast me back to an earlier age when I was a keen athlete. I was never beaten in the 100m sprint.
As time went on, I thought no more of it until years later, married and living in Coldean.
I was sitting in my front room. There was a hell of a bang on the window.
I got up to see a bag of fish and chips running down the window pane.
I went outside and there was a lad on the pavement, well into his teens, making signs and laughing at me.
I made my way towards him and he ran up the road. I ran after him and eventually caught up with him and grabbed him by the wrist. I said I was taking him back to pick up what he threw.
He did just that and put it in the dustbin.
When I let him go, his mate across the road asked him, “Why did you let him catch you?”
He replied, “I couldn’t get away from him. He was too fast.”
Little did he know I could not have run another yard.
What’s that saying? You’re never too old...
