There's no room in the inn – at least not for a while at Sussex's first and only tree tent.

The Secret Campsite is located at Brickyard Farm in Town Littleworth, a small hamlet between the villages of Barcombe, Newick and South Chailey.

Bookings have been full to the brim for the tree tent, which is suspended three metres above the forest floor by a series of ropes, located between three sturdy oak trees on the edge of ancient woodland overlooking the campsite.

Tim Bullen, 45, campsite owner, said: “Demand has been spectacularly high. We’ve been featured in the Guardian’s Top Ten camping sites and Grand Designs and as a result the demand has been phenomenal.It is unusual and I think that’s what makes it such an intriguing place to stay.”

Jason Thawley is the designer behind the revolutionary concept who agreed to the joint venture after being approached by camp site owner, Tim Bullen.

Campers from afar afield as China, Korea, Australia and America have sought out the secret hideaway and booked a night’s stay in the tree tent.

Wooden stairs lead up to the futuristic orb which is camouflaged among the trees and insulated to enable it to stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Inside has room to accommodate two adults and a child with a table and stool.

Two windows give impressive views to both the South Downs and the entire campsite and a wooden seating area made from recycled pieces of wood sits in front of the tree tent along with a campfire centre piece.

Mr Bullen added: “The tree tent gives people a completely different camping experience and that is really what we are trying to achieve with this camp site.

“There is so much wildlife here and we try to keep it close to nature. There are 16 pitches and we have kept it very sparsely populated so we can keep this wonderful atmosphere.”

The Secret Campsite has only been open for just over a year but plans to expand what’s on offer are already in place with plantings of fragrant tea, herbs, fruits and other edible plants.
