A Brighton beach sports venue is to serve up activities all year round thanks to a new £120,000 clubhouse.

Yellowave in Madeira Drive, Brighton, has received planning permission to create a new 120sqm hut at its outside seafront centre.

Bosses at the popular venue hope it will ensure people can use the facility 12 months a year, whether for sporting or other community uses.

Director Katie Mintram said “We are so excited to have a new space which can be used year round for healthy activities.

“We've already had enquiries from Brighton Triathlon Club who are interested in running static turbo-cycling sessions.

“Yellowave is a buzz of activity in summer and we'd like to extend this into the winter months.”

The single storey, wood-clad building will replace the bouldering wall and is due to open next year.

Beach volleyball clinics, coaching courses, junior academy sessions, yoga and stretch classes are among the activities planned.

Mrs Mintram said the space can also be hired by sports groups and for community activities.

It comes after one of the busiest summers ever for the venue, which opened in 2007.

Last month, bosses said they had been selling out nearly all slots three or four weeks in advance.

They estimated on one Saturday in July more than 800 people played beach volleyball on their courts.

Earlier this month, the venue held the European Beach Tennis Championships.

Regular volleyballer Monica Scheuttbacher, 31, of Western Road, Brighton, said: “It's already such an amazing place to play sport.

“I can't wait to try out all the things the new clubhouse will offer.”

Geoffrey Bowden, chairman of Brighton and Hove City Council's economic development committee, said: “With the proposed bathing pavilion nearby [on the former Peter Pan's playground site] this means there will be a lot more activity at that end of the seafront which is great news.

“It's also a great legacy for Yellowave's founder Alan Randall [who died last year] and it's good to see his daughter Katie carrying on developing the venue.

“It's a unique place and it's a great opportunity for more people to exercise.”
