I enjoyed your “did you know” notes on Max Miller (The Argus, August 8), especially following a commemorative tea party in Pavilion Gardens recently.
Max certainly had some claim to be Brighton’s best-known character.
People have been known to visit from the antipodes to photograph his statue. If he were still living and breathing, he would probably charge for that.
It is reported that he once popped into Hanningtons at the bottom of North Street in Brighton on his way to Burlington Street and was examining some suits in the outfitting department.
He asked the assistant if they did alterations, to which the gentleman replied: “Yes, sir. What would you like altered?” So Maxie said, “The price.”
It is also reported that when it was his turn to pay for a round of drinks he’d gone to the gents.
There’ll never be another.
