Angry residents have set up a petition to stop a Seaford bar being turned into homes.

Plans were announced by London and City Estates Ltd to turn V Bar, in Seaford, into homes.

If the plans go ahead the property in Pelham Yard would be converted into a terrace of three houses.

It would include a single fourbedroom house and two houses with two bedrooms, and each house would have a small courtyard garden.

The planning application submitted to Lewes District Council states that the site’s present appearance is “unattractive” and that the property “has suffered with the current use”.

It also argues that the removal of “pub paraphernalia” would “significantly enhance” the site’s appearance.

But local residents have started a petition against the plans, arguing that the site would be best used for retail.

At a planning and highways committee meeting held by Seaford TownCouncil, local resident Pauline Cheatham said: "Pelham Yard is the core of the Old Town.

"A decent restaurant is needed in Seaford and would bring more business to the town, and would benefit all resident of Seaford, giving them more choice for restaurant dining."

Seaford Town Council also strongly objected to the plans, saying: "Turning commercial to residential in primary shopping areas goes against Local Plan policies."

A decision on the proposal will be made by Lewes District Council’s planning committee on August 19.
