Organisers behind a historic electric railway charged their glasses after receiving an award.
Brighton’s Volks Electric Railway was amply honoured this weekend with a coveted Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ Engineering Heritage Award.
The seafront railway, which opened in 1883, joins a list of winners which include the Vulcan Bomber, the SS Great Britain and the Second World War code breaking Bombe machine at Bletchley Park.
Ian Gledhill, chairman of the Volks Electric Railway Association, received the plaque from John Wood, chairman of the Engineering Heritage committee, at a special ceremony at Volk’s Tavern in Madeira Drive, Brighton.
The award kicks off a celebratory month in the life of the railway which celebrates 130 years in operation during the first weekend of August.
