If you go down to Stanmer Park today you’re in for a big surprise – specifically, hundreds of people dressed up as reclusive pop star Kate Bush.

The event is the brainchild of the Shambush Theatre Company, which hopes to set a new world record for the most people to re-enact her famous Wuthering Heights video.

Emily Jenkins, from the theatre group, said the idea for the event came from “her love of Kate Bush”.

She said: “It is sure to be quite a spectacle.

“We are inviting as many people as possible to come along dressed up in red to re-enact the video.

“All you need to take part is a red dress, a sense of fun and willingness to join in and dance.”

Word has spread around the city with hundreds if not thousands expected today between 1pm and 4pm.

DJ and Hove resident Zoe Ball used her morning BBC Radio 2 slot to promote the event yesterday with local TV, radio and newspapers also getting in on the act.

Leading the attempt will be the theatre company’s band the Shambushers, who have appeared at the likes of Glastonbury and Latitude Festival.

As well as the record attempt there will be stalls, live music, a quiz and a freestyle dance competition with prizes.

Fringe director Julian Caddy, who got up on stage with the Shambushers at the Fringe launch in March, said: “It’s really good fun.

“You have to lose your inhibitions and just get into it. I can’t wait.”

Ms Jenkins added: “We are also seeking volunteers who would like to help with stewarding, set up and instructing revellers in the dance routine.

“We hope to see as many of you in Stanmer Park on the day dressed in red and ready to dance.”

Shambu s h e rs have released a video of them warming up for the attempt in the Pavilion Gardens.
