While on my way to work recently, I was doing my usual impression of a drunk driver in trying to avoid the numerous potholes when the travel news came on BBC Sussex. It was advising of delays caused by contractors laying “anti-skid” tarmac.

Can anyone explain to me why this needs to be done when councils say they don’t have enough money to maintain roads as they are?

Surely basic maintenance should be carried out as a priority. When the actual road surfaces are restored to an acceptable condition, then councils can worry about applying extras to them.
