There has been much talk of Ukip doing (extremely) well in recent local elections.
One wonders what would have happened if the turnout hadn’t been so pathetic, especially in East Sussex.
Lewes had the biggest turnout of 42.2%; most, if not all, other towns registered much less.
I asked friends why they didn’t vote and got the usual answers: “I couldn’t be bothered,” and, “All politicians are the same.”
Well things will never change if more than half of those allowed to exercise their right to vote don’t bother to do so.
It’s time to make voting compulsory.
