A motorcyclist who can’t get a parking permit has described a council as “appalling”.
Richard Carter, 36, claims he can’t park his motorbike outside his home in Kingsbury Street, Hove, because Brighton and Hove City Council doesn’t issue parking permits to motorcyclists.
Permits aren’t given to motorcyclists as the council say there are designated parking bays for motorbikes.
But Mr Carter says there are more motorbikes in his road than there are parking bays, forcing himto park “far away” in neighbouring roads.
He asked Brighton and Hove City Council to make more parking bays available in his road, but was told he would have to wait nearly a year.
Mr Carter said: “I find it very hard to find a space for my bike on a daily basis.
“A spot in Baker Street is currently holding a bin, I can only assume because of the building work on the old Coop so there’s therefore no use for it, and the bays on Rosehill Terrace and Rosehill Close are both full most days.
“Not being able to purchase a permit for the street I live in is ridiculous.
“Risking having a parking ticket on my days off and parking my bike far away from my house seems my only option.
“As my bike has an alarm fitted I won’t hear it go off if it’s parked far away, and I’m sure local residents will not appreciate a screaming alarm in the early hours of the morning.
“It’s an absolute outrage that I have to wait a year and I have to say, as a new resident to Brighton, I am absolutely appalled by this council’s lack of organisation.”
A spokesman from Brighton and Hove City Council said: “Parking permits are not issued for motorcycles, as motorcycle parking bays are provided on most streets, where motorbikes can be parked free of charge.
“This makesmaximumuse of available on-street parking space. Any changes to on street parking are advertised locally and people have the opportunity to comment.”
