Yoga enthusiasts are planning to revolutionise the city’s clubbing scene with nights of no alcohol, no drugs and no shoes.

More than 250 revellers attended Brighton and Hove’s first Yoga Rave at the Old Market Theatre on Wednesday night as part of this year’s Fringe.

Following the success of the event, organisers are now planning to hold further nights after saying they have found a “Brighton niche”.

Malindi Lovegrove, who helped put the event together with her husband, said: “It is a proper club night with all the bells and whistles, but fuelled by natural energy boosters instead.

“I really love to party but I don’t drink and sometimes it is hard to find an amazing night out in Brighton when alcohol isn’t your main priority. I often wish there was a high quality club night where your feet weren’t sticking to the floor.”

The evening begins with a group yoga session which helps give revellers energy and confidence.

A leader then takes the clubbers through a session of simple meditation to prepare them for a heavy night of partying.

The bar is then opened, serving everything from wheatgrass shots and alcohol-free smoothies to alternative Indian medicines and energy balls.

Music then takes over with London’s Yoga Jam Band playing their fusion of ancient Sanskrit mantras mixed with contemporary beats.

DJs take the session into the early hours of the morning with entertainment provided by the likes of stilt-walkers and belly dancers.

Ms Lovegrove added: “I think we’ve found a niche here, especially in Brighton. Lots of people want to go out and have a good time but without the sticky floors and vomit.

“People were coming up to me to say how high on life they felt.

“I think we sometimes forget that we don’t need artificial stimulants to make us truly happy.

“At the end people said that they would come again if we held another so I think it has a future in Brighton.”

Yoga Jam’s sister organisation, Prison SMART, also visits prisons to teach yoga and meditation in an attempt to calm inmates and make them more relaxed.
