Seeing the picture of the gold-painted Brighton Corporation AEC MkI in your Looking Back section (The Argus, May 13) reminded me of what a fine fleet of buses the Brighton Corporation transport department operated at this time.
In the fleet, there was a group of buses recognised as being among the finest in Britain.
These were the AEC MkIII models with handsome Weymann bodywork.
To ride in one was very similar to riding in a London Transport RT. This was the model before the Routemaster.
The sad thing here is that all of these buses were sent for scrapping after they were withdrawn from service – the last one being registered as KCD 90 in March 1969.
With them went a key part of Brighton’s rich transport history.
