A long-serving councillor has become a district’s civil figurehead.
Michael Chartier, who has been a Lewes district councillor for 26 years, has been elected the new chairman of the local authority.
Coun Chartier, who represents Lewes Castle, has taken over from Tony Nicholson to hold the post for 2013-14.
Coun Chartier said: “It is a significant year for the district with the 750th anniversary of the Battle of Lewes and being a keen historian I am delighted that the council is involved in helping to fund the Battle Field Site Survey”.
Councillor Ian White, ward councillor for Seaford West, was appointed vice-chairman of the council.
