I have just been treated to a visual feast by Les Enfants Terribles who presented The Trench at TOM. A haunting modern fairytale with a superb script set in the trenches of WWI; The Trench is as fantastical as Pan’s Labyrinth with the language of Shakespeare. The performers were vocally and physically precise, telling the Homeric story through puppetry and verse narration.

The Trench is based on the experience of a miner trapped inside a collapsed tunnel of mud. Like Odysseus he journeys through this underworld, encountering puppet characters so convincingly brought to life that they sent a shiver of terror through the audience. The beast character was especially well animated and expressed through sound.

The only element that I was unsure about was the use of music. The action was punctuated by a solo singer with an acoustic guitar which detracted me from the intensity of the rest of the performance. The style of the music was very modern – potentially the production needed something a little more varied to reflect the emotional journey of the piece.

The Trench delivered a magical tale coupled with a visually incredible world - the lighting design was epic and the set transformed effortlessly. An accomplished production.
