Today I made the trip up to Vardean School to watch a very different kind of Fringe event. This Time Next Year is performed in four cars; performers in the front seat, audience in the back.

Initially this made me feel quite childlike, sitting and watching an interaction happen in the front which I wasn’t part of. By the time I was in the second car, this childishness had changed to voyeurism as I felt invisible, glimpsing the piece in front of me. The car seats blocked a lot of the performers which sometimes made me feel much more connected to one character over the other; a fragmentation which I enjoyed.

I asked to Danielle Christopher to tell me a little about her experience of performing in This Time Next Year:

“Performing in cars is an altogether different experience, both for the spectators and the performers. The proximity and confinement that the space offers provides an intimacy I've never experienced whilst performing in any other space.”

This Time Last Year could have had a bit more narrative cohesion, with characters reappearing in different cars, or a link between the scenes. Performing in cars is such a great idea – the content of the show didn’t quite live up to the concept.

There were some great natural performances from the cast and I would recommend this unusual Fringe experience.
