Apropos nothing at all again, came across some pebbles on the eponymous beach: it turns out that they can be turned into lucky charms and necklaces -- old ladies would sell them near the Chain Pier as souvenirs to holidaymakers. Holed stones were often hung up by the side of a cottage door for luck and were also used by white witches as a charm against ague (flu-like fever.) It is said that when local MP C. Lucas spoke her Oath of Allegiance in 2010, she grasped a holed pebble from the beach in Brighton in her hidden left hand.. .
As described on an national auction site: “ Holey stones” that are naturally created are very hard to find - they have been believed to hold various protective powers: many faiths and cultures worldwide mention holed stones, some believe they contain spirits of ancestors, some believe they bring good luck and offer protection and some believe they can be used to see into other worlds.
“ Seeing stones” have various meanings around the world, some use them for meditation, other believe they contain living spirits, some say they offer protective power and for others they offer a window into other worlds.
They are also known as Witches Amulets, Fairy Stones, Hag Stones and Odin stones (from the Viking legend that Odin transformed himself into a worm and crawled through a hole in a stone to steal the "mead of poetry." ) Native Americans would call them Watai and were inhabited by the Inyan, the Stone People. Wiccans and Pagans believe the hole in the stone is a symbol for the Sacred Womb of Earth, the triple stone being the most sacred of all.
It can also be used as an ornament, Amulet or strung on rope for protection as they were in the old days, strung on door ways they would offer protection for home and business.
They were also hung in bedrooms to prevent nightmares and offer restful sleep.
