Peter Frederick Leeds
Peter Frederick Leeds Passed away recently at Bowes House in Hailsham 11/10/2022. He had a long and illustrious career with the Hong Kong Transport Department. Peter was involved with many of the major transport infrastructure projects during his tenure. These would have included the introduction of the "Octopus Card", the all singing all dancing travel card for all modes of public transport in Hong Kong. This reloadable card was introduced in the mid-eighties, long before the UK equivalent the Oyster card. Some of his other high profile transport initiatives would have involved some of the various tunnels now in existence in Hong Kong. My father started his career in Malaysia while engaged in National Service as so many young men of his generation. He made the decision to apply for a position in the Hong Kong Police service. Subsequently he flew out on an Avro Argonaut to Hong Kong. In those days it took three days to reach Hong Kong by commercial aircraft. He spent his early career in Marine Police before migrating to the housing department. He presided over a period of mass squatter hut clearance whereby, rehousing citizens in modern apartment blocks. Towards the end of his career he was awarded the Imperial Service Order which was awarded to him at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace by her Majesty The Queen. During the latter part of his career he was appointed Honoury Justice Of The Peace to the court service in Hong Kong. Peter leaves a wife Margaret three children and three grandchildren. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. I have received so many e-mails and cards from around the globe offering myself and my family their condolences. I have also received messages from some of his former colleagues, who still work at Transport Department in Hong Kong. My father was a kind and doting father and husband, and a diligent hardworking man. His colleagues remember him as being a very kind boss. This is my tribute to my dear father composed by Marjorie Leeds, otherwise known as daughter number 1.
