Robbie Williams’ Angels is one of the pop star’s best-selling hits and was a natural choice for the Brighton and Hove (Actually) Gay Men’s Chorus to include in their eclectic repertoire.
But when devising their arrangement they never imagined they’d have to perform it in front of its co-writer, Guy Chambers.
“We were invited to sing at Guy Chambers’ Christmas party a few days ago,” explains the chorus’ chairman John Hamilton. “It was fantastic, but rather nervewracking. Thankfully, he said he really enjoyed it. Then again, he had to say that, didn’t he?”
The performance crowns a good year for the chorus. They were nominated for a Golden Handbag community award, again presented donations to several charities and groups (including Dame Vera Lynn’s Trust for children with cerebral palsy), and started recording their debut album after winning a contract with Shameless Talent.
“It’s a big project and we’re doing it on top of all the events the chorus usually does,” says Hamilton of the album. “I’ve barely had time to breathe in the last few months!”
Tomorrow they will perform their popular show Twas The Night Before Christmas for the fourth consecutive year. A sell-out previously, it includes a range of festive songs and readings from guests including the Lord Lieutenant, the Mayor of Brighton and the High Sheriff.
Musical director Jason Pimblett says: “We have a wonderful show at St Andrews this year which will set the scene for the Christmas season. It will include many fond Christmas favourites. There will be some lovely readings as well.
“So come along for a happy evening with family and friends.”
