The bearded, formidable figure otherwise known as Will Oldham has been playing his idiosyncratic brand of Americana since long before it was fashionable.
Initially performing under the monicker Palace Brothers (and then other variations on that name) the Kentucky-born singer-songwriter later took his current title and has released a record or two every year since.
Beware is the 38-year-old’s latest offering and an album he describes as an attempt to write standards in a “very Elvis, very Great American Songbook” vein, with the occasional nod to his beloved Merle Haggard, but inevitably, “things mutate in the delivery”.
Oldham is famously catholic in his work, believing genre is no indicator of a song’s value – alongside collaborations with the likes of PJ Harvey and Bjork, he has covered songs by musicians including R Kelly and Mariah Carey.
