“When I was really young I used to be inspired by strong female artists such as Patti Smith, Bjork and Kate Bush.
“I really loved Alanis Morissette too – artists like her with big, strong voices and something to say, a bit of weirdness to them, which felt rare, and they weren’t afraid to be who they wanted to be.
“I feel like it is difficult to be truly yourself and not be afraid of what other people think. They were really honest and everything felt like it obviously came from them. It was emotional and personal.
“When I won a Grammy [she sang on Clarity with Zedd] it felt like it did change my life.
“It’s very early on to win something that is so amazing, but it does change your life. I think it also puts a fire under your feet in a way that makes you want to work a lot harder. It’s an incredible thing to achieve. It makes you feel like you’ve a lot to prove and a lot of work to still do.”
