Straight off the back of their new album Relaxer, Alt J kicked off their Seaside Tour at the Brighton Centre. Following support act Blaenavon, who displayed an impressive alt-rock sound with a twist, Alt J took to the stage. The three-piece, who formed in Leeds, began their set with a new song, 3WW, which was accompanied by an a dazzling light show.
From there, Alt-J seamlessly intertwined tracks from their three very different albums, with very little by way of introduction. The set was somehow cohesive, though, and enabled an all-encompassing journey from debut An Awesome Wave right through to Relaxer.
The third album is very distinct from any of their previous efforts but when played alongside their prior work it revealed itself to be a true Alt-J album; evidence that they haven't moved away from their original sound but are just evolving into an ever-more exciting prospect. Clearly, the band have longevity and fans will be looking forward to further albums.
Lead singer Joe Newman's unusual but highly addictive tones were flawless, whilst Thom Sunny Green was electric on the drums, never missing a beat. Gus Unger Hamilton owned the keyboard, shining especially during Dissolve Me. The band encored with Left Hand Free but left the best until last with Breezeblocks, letting the crowd holler large parts of the song for them.
A great gig and a great start for the seaside tour.
