Manchester’s PINS have evolved over the past couple of years, with a dense sound that now falls comfortably between the agitation of US bands like Bikini Kill and the electronic noise originated by rock royalty from their hometown.

In fact, the black-clad five-piece even dropped a cover of Joy Division’s Dead Souls into their set, which managed to sound lofty and imposing despite some problems with the electronic drumkit. But that wasn’t even the most well-known or eagerly-anticipated song of the night.

The band made the brave decision to open with Aggrophobe, which features Iggy Pop on vocals and has been receiving understandably large levels of radio airplay of late. With vocals handled by the band themselves in this instance, the meandering, glitchy feel of this bass-heavy "hit" was equally as impressive as the Stooge-supported recorded equivalent.

By the close, many of the Rialto’s crowd joined PINS onstage for the encore, to conclude a night in which dancing – and interaction with a devoted fanbase – was key. Sure, PINS have evolved, but it seems their fans have too.
