“WHY are there so many old men here?” shouted an observant female fan when Haley Bonar called out for questions before her encore. It was true, but hardly worth mentioning, as it would seem the US singer is finally bound for a broader audience than those attending her Green Door Store show last year.
This gig, the opening night of her tour, came straight after a 6 Music festival gig in Glasgow. Her excellent 2016 album Impossible Dream is splattered with radio friendly tracks. The first half of this show was made up of songs from that, with Stupid Face, Your Mom Is Right and especially Hometown shining.
Then followed a loose retrospective before the encore. For this, Bonar played solo acoustic guitar and muddled through her “first public” performance of Radiohead’s Karma Police before the three band members returned for a cover of Wreckless Eric’s Whole Wide World.
Throughout, Bonar seemed worldwise, wry and funny, with her songs proving they will more than stand up to the repeated plays they’ll get on this tour. The venues may be larger but the sentiment is still charmingly personal – no matter who it’s directed at.
